Thailand travel tips

Attire

We recommend packing the following items:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing for daytime
  • A light jacket, sweater, or long-sleeved shirt for cooler evenings
  • An umbrella or light rain jacket, just in case of rain
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses for sun protection
  • Insect repellent, especially for evenings or visits to natural areas

Currency and payments

The local currency is the Thai Baht (THB). Credit cards are accepted in some stores but not all, so it’s advisable to exchange some cash in advance. You can check the current exchange rate online before you arrive. ATMs are widely available – look for a 7-Eleven if you need to find one quickly.

Language

The official language of Thailand is Thai. While you might find English speakers in tourist areas, hotels, and some restaurants, English is not widely spoken, especially in rural areas. Learning basic Thai phrases can be helpful for smoother interactions.

Useful Thai phrases:

  • Sawasdee (sah-wat-dee) + khrap (male) / kha (female) = Hello / Goodbye
  • Khop Khun (kop-koon) + khrap / kha = Thank you
  • Chai = Yes
  • Mai = No
  • Mai phet = Not spicy

SIM Card and Internet access

Tourist SIM card packages are available at the airport, priced between 299 to 899 Baht (approximately 9 to 28 USD), depending on the duration and data allowance.

Recommended providers:

Free Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels, cafés, and restaurants across Thailand.

Weather

October marks the end of the rainy season and the beginning of the best time to visit Chiang Rai. Temperatures are pleasantly warm, with daytime highs ranging from 28°C to 31°C (82°F to 88°F) and cooler nighttime lows between 19°C to 22°C (66°F to 72°F).

Health and safety

To help ensure a safe and enjoyable visit, please keep the following tips in mind:

  • Avoid tap water; drink bottled water.
  • Use mosquito repellent when outdoors, especially near water or lush vegetation.
  • Cars drive on the left side of the road. Observe traffic rules and be cautious when crossing streets.

Transportation and food delivery

  • Grab is the most convenient app for taxis and food delivery in Thailand. Android | iOS
  • Bolt is another option for taxis. Android | iOS
