THE-ICE IPoE Forum 2025 will bring together representatives from TH&E research, education and industry to address the theme ‘Adapting to Global Shifts: Innovating Tourism and Hospitality Education for a Sustainable Future‘.
Chiang Rai, Thailand’s northernmost province, borders Myanmar to the north and Laos to the east. Founded in the 13th century, Chiang Rai city was the first capital of the Lanna Kingdom (“Kingdom of a Million Rice Fields”). Historically, the region was rich in natural resources and known as a centre of opium production, forming the so-called “Golden Triangle” with neighbouring Laos and Myanmar.
In 1972, Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra, the King’s Mother, initiated development projects to support local hill tribes, promoting traditional crafts, agriculture, and education for ethnic minority youth. After her passing in 1995, Mae Fah Luang University was established to honour her legacy and expand access to higher education in northern Thailand. Locals affectionately called her “Mae Fah Luang,” meaning “Royal Mother from the Sky.”
Chiang Rai today offers a rich cultural heritage and vibrant tourist attractions, blending ancient Lanna traditions with artistic creativity.
