University of Santo Tomas (UST) is the oldest existing private university in Asia and the largest Catholic university in the world in a single campus.  It was originally founded as a College on 28th of April 1611 by the Superiors of the Province of the Most Holy Rosary of the Order of the Preachers. In January 1908 it was registered as a non-stock, non-profit education institution in the Philippines under Act 1459. Today, it is an institution with over 43,000 student enrolments. UST has fourteen (14) autonomous colleges/faculties and is offering fifty-two (52) undergraduate programmes, as well as thirtynine (39) Master and PhD degrees in the Graduate School.

UST is registered with the Commission of Higher Education (CHED) in the Philippines. Several UST degree programmes have been accredited by CHED as Centers of Excellence and Centers of Development. Furthermore, it was recognised to have the highest number of accredited programmes in the country by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities’ Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) in December 2013.

Tourism, Hospitality and Hotel Studies

The College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (CTHM) is one of the leading providers of tourism and hospitality education in the Philippines. It is a college that sets itself apart from the crowd. For years, CTHM has produced generations of outstanding, employable graduates, tourism professionals, hoteliers & restaurateurs. They are tourism and hospitality professionals who are more than just “concrete symbols” of the College – they represent industry choice. The College boasts several members of the diplomatic corps of various foreign embassies and consulates. The College benefits from the vast experience of the University’s 400-year history that has created processes and policies that are transparent and operational.

The tourism and hotel programmes were established under the Education Act of 1982, Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports. The Bachelor of Science in Travel Management programme has been granted Level III status by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Committee on Accreditation (PACUCOA) and the Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management programme has been granted Level II reaccredited status.

Academic Excellence

QS Asian Ranking – Four Star Award

UST earned the distinction of being the only university in the Philippines with the four-star rating from QS Asian rankings. This rating means “a typical four-star university is highly international, demonstrating excellence in both research and teaching. The institution provides an excellent environment for students and faculty.”

With the 2015 QS Asian rankings, the University of Santo Tomas is ranked third among all universities in the Philippines.

The Hospitality Management Awards (2014-2015)

HRM students continue to harvest awards in national competitions such as:

a) Thomasian bagged first place in an international online competition on hotel and restaurant management held last Nov. 9 to 20, 2015. Miguel Angelo Viray Eñano, a hotel and restaurant ust-lettersmanagement senior, won in the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (ICHRIE) & Collegiate DECA Virtual Business Hotel Competition, an online contest where participants competed in a hotel simulation focused on profit and customer satisfaction.

b) Martin Antonio Tioseco and Kate Immanuel Go represented the Philippines in the 2015 Hong Kong International Culinary Classics held last May 2015 at Hong Kong International Convention Center

c) The Umami Bowl Award for Excellence, the highest award and most important award was given to the University of Santo Tomas for two consecutive years (2014 and 2015) for gathering the highest team score in the Ajinomoto Culinary Challenge.

d) The University of Santo Tomas is also the defending champion (2014, 2015) of the Jolly University Grand Cook-Off Challenge.

e) HRM students in 2 consecutive years (2013, 2014) brought home the Championship Title for American Heritage Kitchen Battle.

f) HRM students also excel in Cooking Demonstration competitions, Denise Gallardo won Silver in MAFBEX 2013. Elena Faith Carino bagged the Gold Medal in MAFBEX 2014 and Angelica Tongol won Gold in MAFBEX 2015.

g) Hyacinth Jeaned Barros, 4th year HRM student, bagged the Gold Medal for a Business Plan Competition with her outstanding performance and presentation of a food cart business proposal under 5,000 Pesos during the Grand Culinary Challenge in 2014.

h) The HRM students won Gold in the Amuse Bouche category and Soup Kitchen category during the National Food Showdown event held on September 23-24, 2014.

i) Two graduating students won the top prizes in the Universal Robina Corporation Baking competition in July, 2013.

j) In 2013 National Food Showdown, HRM students also won GOLD in the Seafood Display, Amuse Bouche and Table Setting categories.
